Brief History of the organization and why it is rare. Early in March 1946. Members of the Automobile Manufacturers Association decided to organize a celebration which would celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the manufacturing of the first automobile in the City of Detroit. The celebration would be a look towards the future of the automotive industry following the shortages caused by World War II and a tribute to the automobiles and automobile manufacturers of the past. This celebration, which came to be known as the Automotive Golden Jubilee, was held from May 29 through June 9, 1946. People involved in the celebration include William S. Stirton, and Mary Grace Simescu. The Jubilee celebration was held in the Grand Circus Park area at the Olympia Stadium, the Masonic Auditorium, and at Brigs Stadium [Tiger Stadium], at various times during the May 29 through June 9 celebration. Lieutenant General William S. KNUDSEN was the was the former President of the General Motors Corporation and headed the nations military output during the pre-Pearl Harbor national defense period [1940] and later became Chief of War Production for the Army. On the National Defense Commission. He was responsible for areas involved in the production, distribution and awarding of war material contracts to manufacturers. Mr Knudsen was a tall man [six foot three] and was highly respected by the men working for him. He was known to wear a hat whenever he sat behind a desk because he claimed that he could think better. Knudsen served as the chairman of the National Automotive Golden Jubilee Committee and was a prominent figure throughout the entire jubilee celebration. Active supervision of the events held during the jubilee which various industries helped sponsor was the responsibility of George Romney, who served as the Managing Director of the Golden Jubilee Committee and was responsible for the Tribute to the Automotive Pioneers banquet and ceremony on May 31, 1946 as well as the Antique Automotive Exposition. He also served on the Automotive Council for War Production, which sought to concentrate all the manufacturing strength of industry toward war materials. Romney also served as the General Manager of the Automobile Manufacturers Association. BROWN was the chairman of the board of the Detroit Edison Company, a former United States Senator for Michigan and served as President of the Automotive Golden Jubilee Civic Committee. As a senator in Washington. He was described by the Washington Post as a typical American. Brown worked toward continuing the Federal Housing Agency, served on the Democratic Steering Committee which was responsible for directing legislative progress and appointing senators when vacancies came up, and strove for price control in December 1941. He lost a re-election attempt in November, 1942 to Homer Ferguson and served then, at the request of President Roosevelt, as the Administrator of the Office of Price Administration for one.
