Original Vintage c1920’s”Price’s Motorine Motor Oil” Double Sided Enamel Sign. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS ON THE UK SITE AND LISTED IN GB POUNDS. This super “Price’s Motorine” double sided sign dates from the 1920’s and is in “as found” condition and has not been repaired or restored by us. Prices Patent Candle Co was started in 1830s as Edward Price & Co their main business was the production of candles from paraffin wax. Candle making produced a by-product of heavy oil, which was purely a waste product. That changed when after much experimentation they produced lubricating oil for steam engines and later motor lubricants. Strange that this waste material was to become a more valuable product than the candles it came from. This double sided sign would have been attached to a garage forecourt wall where it could be seen by passing motorists. The sign has the usual enamel losses and nibbles to the edges, as well as some patches of enamel loss to the body of the sign, one side has suffered more than the other. It also has the usual scuffs, dings and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age and use. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs. The side mounting bracket has been flattened at some time, but is still well attached and sturdy. The blue and yellow enamel background and white lettering still has a good depth of colour and gloss. This is a good example of a classic piece of British automobilia which would grace any collection. It measures 46 cm (18 inches) across.
