This wonderful, iconic, B. ” double sided Union Jack sign dates from the 1920’s and is in “as found condition and has not been repaired or restored. BRITISH PETROLEUM’BP’ a name that has been synonymous with the petrol industry for as long as people can remember. Surprisingly BRITISH PETROLEUM was only officially adopted as the trading name of the company in 1954 although the name was first used some 45 years earlier. This double sided sign would have been attached to a garage forecourt wall where it could be seen by passing motorists. The sign has the usual enamel losses and nibbles to the edges, as well as some patches of enamel loss and crazing to the body of the sign, mainly to one side. It also has the usual scuffs, marks and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age and use. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs. Unfortunately, the flange is missing. The red, white and enamel Union Jack and lettering still has a good depth of colour and gloss. This is a good example of a classic piece of British automobilia which would grace any collection. It measures 61 cm (24 inches) long and 40 cm (15 3/4inches) high. We take great care to describe our items as clearly and honestly as possible, including any faults or flaws that we may see.
