Great vintage metal-cased illuminated sign for a Scottish motor company which folded in the early1980s. Founded in 1899, they had quite an impressive range of vehicles including some vehicles they produced for the War Office that were later turned into charabancs. They even made Enfield revolvers.. Vehicle production continued until 1980. There’s a very impressive write-up on the company, including a list of their extensive vehicle portfolio, in Wikipedia. Mark Knopfler even referenced the company in the song Border Reiver about a Scotstoun lassie with the words’She’s an Albion…. Sure as the Sunrise’ – a clear reference to the company motif. The Wiki entry is well worth a look for the background and history of Albion Motors. As you will have seen the sign has a nice sun, sea and snake motif. It has been fitted with a new four-metre flex and plug at the electrical shop but in order to make it legally compliant (I think the unit wasn’t earthed previously), the electrician has had to adapt the internal bayonet socket and the bulb is a bit short. I have enquired with a big lighting retailer if there is a longer bulb available – and I think there is which would further illuminate the’Service’ part of the sign. Ideally, it should have a strip light fitted but it still looks very nice as it is, throwing out a warm red glow. The yellow colour on the illuminated pics is a trick of the light or a flash reflection. It measures 57 x 43 x 9cms.
