This wonderful, iconic, B. ” double sided Union Jack sign dates from the 1920’s and is in “as found condition and has not been repaired or restored by us. BRITISH PETROLEUM’BP’ a name that has been synonymous with the petrol industry for as long as people can remember. Surprisingly BRITISH PETROLEUM was only officially adopted as the trading name of the company in 1954 although the name was first used some 45 years earlier. This double sided sign would have been attached to a garage forecourt wall where it could be seen by passing motorists. The sign has the usual enamel losses and nibbles to the edges, as well as some patches of enamel loss and crazing to the body of the sign on both sides. It also has the usual scuffs, dings and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age and use. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs. The side bracket shows some signs of surface rust, but is still well attached and sturdy. The red, white and enamel Union Jack and lettering still has a good depth of colour and gloss. This is a good example of a classic piece of British automobilia which would grace any collection. It measures 61 cm (24 inches) long and 40 cm (15 3/4inches) high.
