Original AA Automobile Association / Royal Scottish Automobile Club 1919-series sign. Size: 30-inch diameter Condition: good. It was not until the 1930’s that Local Authorities assumed responsibility for road signage in the UK. Up until that time it was largely left to the motoring organisations to erect signs so that their members and other roads users knew where they were. Most of these signs were taken down during the Second World War (to avoid helping the enemy in the event of invasion) and scrapped. This sign for Strachur in Argyll and Bute, Scotland is rarer than many in that it also incorporates the Royal Scottish Automobile Club insignia and its slogan’Gang warily’. In very good condition for its age and bearing in mind it will have stood exposed to the elements for many year, this very heavy sign is 90+ years old and represents an interesting piece of motoring history.
